Yes, the long and short shaded flower turned into a bookmark. I guess you like this idea. This could be a lovely gift to a dear one who is a book lover.
You can also attach the flower to one side of a paper bookmark and place the bookmark into a book such that only the flower peeps out at the top.
If you do the long and short shading using silk threads you can hang it on the Christmas tree as an ornament. You can make 10 or 20 flowers like this, attach those to a ribbon, and use it as a decoration.
The flower can be appliquéd into kids’ dresses or can be attached to a hairclip, headband, or bracelet as Deepa (http://deepashome.blogspot.com/) and Lakshmi (http://sadalas.blogspot.com/) suggested.

Do you have any other ideas? Please do share them here. I will post the bookmark tutorial tomorrow.

I'm going to back a detached piece (because the back will be visible) for the first time. I've done heaps of detached pieces in the past....
Did you back the rose?
I plan to use dupion - it's for the butterfly project I'm working on - about 2"x3" - the back tail. Any hints and tips from you would be much appreciated!
Applique looks good,Flora. But the dress should be a simple one without too many frills - the eye should fall on the embroidery ,not on the frills :)
Yes, Deepa. I agree with you. Even the color combination is not good. I photographed this dress just to share the applique idea. I didnt sew the piece actually. Also, I didn't have the time to search for a dress that exactly suits this purpose.
I have changed the photo now. I guess this is a little better than the old one. Forgive me for the green satin ribbon appearing under the flower in the photo. It makes the applique look like a badge. :-)
Hi Megan,
I didn't back the fabric yet. I used two layers of cotton fabric for this flower, so it is already stiff. However to hide the stitches on the wrong side of the fabric, this is what I'm going to do.
Trace the same flower pattern on a cotton fabric, cut out the piece leaving 5 cm around the pattern, hem the edges by hand (this is to avoid fray edges), and then stick the piece on the back of the flower bookmark using fabric glue.
I didn't try it yet. Will show you when it is done.
Beautiful embroidered flowers Flora .I like your other things too.
Hi Lakshmi and Maisie Sparrow, Thanks for your comments.
Hi Flora.
Silly blogs. You never know if someone has answered you unless you 'follow all comments'.
I was going to
- go around the edge of the piece (small back butterfly wing), buttonholing onto wire.
- sew on some cotton batting cut to fit just with overstitches
- buttonhole some silk dupion, turning the cut edge as I went, tho maybe pre-hemming is a good idea because it is pretty slippery
- couch a thick knitted sort of gold thread onto the edge
I'll ask for hints and tips on Stitchin' Fingers in a day or two. Are you on there? Look out for the question in the Stumpwork Group,
All the best
Hi Megan,
Your idea for backing the fabric looks fine too. I searched for hints and tips in the Stumpwork Group on Stitchin' Fingers, but could not find it. Could you please let me know when the discussion is on?
Hi Flora,
I found your comment by accident in g-mail.
I made a post about backing the detached piece in http://elmsleyrose.blogspot.com/2011/06/julies-butterfly-stumpwing.html
I've looked to see if I talked about it first on a stitchin' fingers discussion, but no. There was an interesting discussion on Appendages (legs, antennae) - various wires that could be used at http://stitchinfingers.ning.com/group/stumpworkandraisedembroidery/forum/topics/butterfly-appendages
